Inspired by Te Whāriki – A Holistic Approach to Learning
At The Fern Early Learning Centres we embrace the New Zealand early learning curriculum, Te Whāriki, which emphasises child-led, play-based, and holistic learning.
Our approach ensures that your child:
Develops a strong sense of belonging and identity
Explores their world with curiosity and confidence
Builds meaningful relationships through whanaungatanga (kinship and connection)
Learns through nature, storytelling, and hands-on cultural experiences
We believe that early childhood is a time for exploration, discovery, and connection, and our educators create rich learning environments where children thrive.
Meet Sunny
Piko is the official brand mascot of The Fern.
The name Piko comes from the Māori word “pikopiko” meaning “young curled shoots of ferns,” symbolising new growth and potential.
Piko embodies the spirit of discovery, growth, and care, reflecting our values of nurturing young minds in a safe and supportive environment.
Our commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility
Inspired by Te Whāriki’s principles of sustainability (Kaitiakitanga) and Indigenous Australian land-care wisdom, we empower children to become guardians of the earth through:
Recycling and repurposing materials into creative projects
Gardening experiences
Water conservation and caring for local ecosystems
How our NZ study tour shapes your child’s early learning journey
Our Director of Operations and Senior Operations Manager embarked on a study tour across New Zealand to explore its world-renowned early childhood curriculum. Immersed in nature-based learning environments and innovative teaching practices, they returned inspired by the deep connections between culture, community, and the land. These insights continue to shape our programs at The Fern, bringing your child enriched, holistic, and globally informed learning experiences every day.
